When I heard Zane had the Surf and Turf idea and kind of had the foundation of it down, I was kind of pushing him a little bit more like, "Oh, yeah, we should do kind of more shows and more stuff." I'm doing a music business degree right now, so it works for a lot of my assignments. I was a part of Unfortunate Records in Santa Clarita before COVID hit, which was kind of a similar thing to what Zane was doing. I started helping out just kind of more and more and fell into it in a way.įinn: I also kind of had nothing to do with the creation, but I've always kind of wanted to start a collective. And then I started going to shows, and I started going to Strange Case shows more when I found out Finn became their drummer because I was like, "Dude, it's my homie.” I started hanging out a little bit more and wanted to leave school and was just really inspired by everything that was going on. I grew up in this area, so I knew about Strange Case for a while, and I'd always liked their music and stuff. I was just attending shows, and I’ve known Finn personally since the second grade. Roxanne: I had nothing to do with the initial creation. And I didn't really want to be a record label in all the sense of what a label really does, but I wanted to be an art collective. That's a perfect name." Surf and Turf Records. It was a total Growlers Beach Goth ripoff, because they came up with their own name for it. So I was like, "I need to come up with a name." At the time, we were calling Strange Case's genre Surf and Turf. ![]() If you want to grow your career, you need to market it better. I felt like I needed a better way to market myself, and putting on shows is such a valuable thing in the music industry. I was putting together house shows, and I would book the bands, and I would have my friends who are good at art do the flier for it. Let's throw our own shows." So that's kind of how it started. I was like, "Man…How do we do this? Screw it. We wanted to play cool shows, but no one would host and we kind of sucked. Zane: Mikey (lead singer of Strange Case) and I have been playing shows since we were in middle school and started to take things more seriously 5 years ago when we formed the band. If you could each summarize Surf and Turf in one short sentence, what would that sentence be? I'm kind of his little minion or assistant, if you will. I'm in Strange Case with Zane, so I just do whatever Zane needs. I also like to go to shows and have fun!įinn: I'm Finn Bennett, and I help wherever is needed. I reached out to help with Surf and Turf at the end of last year because I was a huge fan of this music scene and wanted to get involved as much as I could and just be part of the art that everybody was creating. ![]() I just kind of put shows together and have fun. I started Surf and Turf sometime in 2019. Prior to their first curated show of the year, The ANTI Magazine had the opportunity to dive deep and talk about all things dreams, set in stone goals, and taking action.įirst of all, thank you for taking the time to chat with me. What truly sets Surf and Turf apart is the following: they aren’t reinventing the wheel at all, they’re slapping some surf wax right on that bad boy and getting it ready to modernize. Having a roster of stellar artists signed to respective contracts in conjunction with a history of well produced shows most definitely gives Surf and Turf a leg above all those attempting to reinvent the wheel in their own way. Surf and Turf Records is a local team dedicated to elevating the voices and ideas of those who may be residing in your own backyard. Not only solely featuring the multitude of stars in the article, but their STARTS as well. This article, much like Surf and Turf Records, will be a collective in itself. Such blurred visions inspired team Surf and Turf to do the unthinkable: follow through. Blurred visions such as these prohibit us from seeking a future where our inner potential thrives as a result of fruitful labor and soulful, mindful gains through learned life experience. Now factor in the ratio regarding how often you follow through with those ideas vs how often you’ve given up because the outcome felt unlikely. Ask yourself how often you’ve thought of an idea.
